A ‘Click Through Rate’ is often known by its abbreviation – CTR.
The click through rate is the number of individuals who clicked on a link to be taken to the intended URL vs. the number of individuals who could have.
Examples of where you would use/see a CTR include….
The number of people who clicked on your website in Google’s search results vs. the number of people who saw your website in Google search results (these are known as impressions).
The number of people who clicked on your paid advert in Google’s search results vs. the number of people who saw your paid advert in Google search results.
The number of people who clicked on the link within your email to your website’s product page vs. the number of people who were sent or opened your email.
What is a Good CTR?
A good click through rate is a high click through rate. The higher your CTR, the more people have clicked through to your webpage.
The CTR for your webpage will depend on your industry, how competitive the industry or keyword is, and how relevant/interesting the link/end page is.
Any online marketing work aims to get as high a CTR as possible.
How do I calculate my Click Through Rate?
If your webpage appeared 1,000 times in a Google search result and 100 people clicked on the listing for your webpage in a Google search result, then that webpage would have a CTR of 10%.
How to Improve your Click Through Rate
To improve your CTR you need to look at what the original click is asking the individual to do.
Check out the meta information that appears in Google search results – does it encourage an individual to click and head to your website?
Check out the ad copy for your paid adverts – does that encourage people to click on the advert?
Check out the email campaigns you send out – is the link prominent and does it encourage people to click on the link?
Put yourself in your customer’s shoes, and consider running A/B testing to ensure that your links are as perfect as they can be.
